The intent of this dream space is to replicate a safe environment for artists and media professionals. A place where a person with creative visions can sketch, plan and build with peer and community support, with the intent to share, present and promote a greater social change. In addition, being able to provide various media services, at request.

ABOUT subtext

Hello, my name is, Jessica Brown, founder of Subtext,

Getting to this point, has been the most excruciating, adventurous and emotionally rewarding journey, ever. If I were to explain it all to you, I highly doubt you would ever believe that one person really could have gone through, so much, just to get to the position of renting a space, to produce and make independent films.

My adventure did not start in California. It started in Ankeny, IA and it really kicked off, when I moved away from home, Urbandale, IA, in 2005. That is when I made the big leap and moved cross country, to a place I had only visited a couple times and only knew a hand full of people. Hindsight, I say I would wait and save, before doing something like that, again, but my heart will not allow me to believe that.

Since living in California, I have moved upwards around 34 times.

With every move, I lost a little bit of my physical possessions, that I brought with me, from Iowa. Movies, my car, clothes, family photos, books, ... my dignity. Though I never lost my drive, ambition or dream, to open a studio for others like me. A place where we can go and communicate our artistic professions and performances.

What got me onto this track, was spending nearly four years, at Diablo Valley College, learning everything I could about theatre. There, I took as many directing and acting classes, I could. I found my way into student government, where I learned about the Robert Rules of Order, how to collaborate with over two hundred individuals, the basics of working in an organized board structure.

My experiences as the film festival director, inter club council representative and drama club co-president, have all helped me, outside of the safety nets of the schools institution. Since having left community college, I spent the next short years, producing films independently with various Bay Area filmmakers.

In 2015, the biggest project I have worked on, to date, was released at the New Parkway Theatre, in Oakland, CA. "The UNNamed," was a feature I had been contracted to adapt from novel, to screen. The roles I played in the production, were, screenwriter, production manager, director, editor and camera operator.

Now, being in Vallejo, for under a little four years, I have helped to produce two short films. A fan fiction film, with the intent to draw the attention of George Lucas, to build his new museum, in Vallejo. The second short film, "Dirty Laundry." Both films were produced under four months. The fan fiction film, "Star Wars: Return to Vallejo," screened at, The Hub, in Vallejo, CA, while "Dirty Laundry," was released privately.

With all this past experience and never really having my own dedicated space to create and organize, I made the choice to invest into myself and my goals, "Subtext: Creative Services."  I have always wanted to be able to create but also be able to serve. My community, no matter where I live, means everything to me.

Subtext is where we make our dreams, a reality.
